Kochi: Hibi Eden, MP, on Monday demanded strict action against private buses indulging in rash and dangerous driving in Kochi.Highlighting the growing threat to public safety, the MP called on transport minister C P John to rein in the private bus lobby, while noting that competitive racing between private buses has created severe hazards across the city.“Pedestrians can no longer walk without fear, while two-wheeler riders and private motorists are constantly put at risk by unpredictable and reckless bus manoeuvres,” he said, while speaking at an event to launch a new solar tourism boat of the state water transport department.Eden raised concerns regarding substance abuse among drivers. He demanded special drives to test drivers for drug use behind the wheel and insisted that those found guilty face stringent penalties.TOI did a campaign last week, highlighting the issue.The transport minister launched the 30-seater ‘Saurya-2’, which will conduct daily trips to tourist destinations like Fort Kochi and Kadamakkudy.“The first trip starts at 10am when it takes visitors to Fort Kochi via Marine Drive and Vallarpadam Island.
