Six people are dead following a tragic and destructive fire that quickly tore through a Brooklyn apartment in the middle of the night, FDNY officials said Thursday morning. The first 911 calls were made shortly after 1:30 a.m. for a fire in Sunset Park on 58th Street between 6th and 7th avenues. Responding firefighters found a two-story residential building engulfed in flames. Video captured giant flames flowing out of second-story windows and the loud pop of breaking glass . Neighbors were held back for the threat of black smoke and possible extension of the fire to buildings on either side. More than 200 firefighters responded to the block. Roughly an hour after the first call, firefighters were able to extinguish the deadly inferno. Additional video captured firefighters performing CPR on a victim laying on a stretcher outside. The FDNY said hazmat officials were called to the home for the presence of a lithium-ion battery. The battery has not yet been identified as the cause of the fire. The city’s medical examiner has been at the house all morning. In addition to the six people who lost their lives, four other civilians and three firefighters were injured. Officials said all six people who died were adults. No other information about them was immediately released. Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered condolences and said the fire was still under investigation. “This is an unimaginable loss, and we grieve alongside every loved one and neighbor and pray for the recovery of those injured,” Mamdani said in a statement on social media. “I am grateful for the FDNY’s swift response. Our administration is relocating displaced New Yorkers to safe housing and connecting them to long-term support and resources. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
