Further charges brought over Berlin Holocaust memorial attack

A 19-year-old Syrian man has been charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder and grievous bodily harm in connection with an attack on a Spanish tourist at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin.

The Syrian man is alleged to have been an accomplice to the main perpetrator, who has already been convicted and sentenced to 13 years in prison for the attack.

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany has accused the Syrian man of encouraging the main perpetrator to carry out the knife attack, which left the Spanish tourist with life-threatening injuries.

Germany's Public Prosecutor's Office has charged a Syrian man in connection with an incident last year at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, during which a Spanish tourist was attacked with a knife and suffered life-threatening injuries.

The man, who is alleged to have been an accomplice to the main perpetrator - who has already been convicted - was charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder and grievous bodily harm, according to a statement issued on Wednesday by Germany's highest prosecuting authority.

He is alleged to have been in contact with the main perpetrator immediately before the knife attack in February last year. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office alleges he spent the afternoon before the offence with the main perpetrator and encouraged him to carry out his plan.

He has been in pre-trial detention since the end of May, having previously been arrested in Berlin.

The main perpetrator, who is also from Syria, was sentenced in March by the Berlin Higher Regional Court to 13 years' imprisonment for attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm.
