GOP rep believes Iran was involved in thwarted terrorist plan on US air base in the UK

Rep. Kat Cammack (R-Fla.) said Sunday the Iranian government was “clearly” involved in an alleged terror attack authorities in the United Kingdom thwarted earlier in the day.

“The simple answer is that clearly Iran was involved, but of course that is going to be investigated and determined,” the congresswoman told Laura Ingle on “NewsNation Live.”

British authorities on Sunday arrested five men suspected of plotting an attack on RAF Fairford, a Royal Air Force base located in southwest England that the United Kingdom owns and the U.S. operates.

London Metropolitan Police said authorities received a call early Sunday morning local time regarding three suspicious vehicles traveling toward the base, as reported by The Associated Press . The nationalities of the arrested men are not public knowledge.

American forces have launched strikes against Iranian missile sites from the base. Cammack noted that on Sunday, telling Ingle the base is the “forward deployment area of our assets” engaged in the Iran war .

“So it stands to reason that through the proxy network that Iran has of Hamas and Hezbollah, that they probably were in coordination on this front because as Iran has been very publicly saying, they are ready for more confrontation and they have always operated through their terror networks rather than facing threats head on,” the Florida lawmaker added.

President Trump on Sunday praised U.K. authorities for arresting the men, saying his government “worked with” its counterparts across the pond.

“They were looking to do big damage to our fort and working with the British worked out great. … We had them under view for a long time and we got ‘em,” the president told reporters in Chicago, according to NewsNation’s Libbey Dean .

Cammack also called the arrests a “testament to the relationship” between the U.S. and the United Kingdom, adding she was “grateful” for service members at the base and law enforcement officers for taking a “proactive” stance.

“The safety and security of the public is our first priority, and I want people to know that we will always take every step necessary to protect our communities and keep our country safe,” United Kingdom Minister Andy Burnham wrote on social media Sunday .

“The investigation remains ongoing, and I would urge people not to speculate while the authorities establish the full facts,” Burnham added.
