Hull Truck Theatre makes security centre stage after break-ins

A theatre is bidding for council funding to bolster its security after being hit by break-ins, thefts and antisocial behaviour.

A report due before Hull City Council's crime prevention grants sub-committee revealed that Hull Truck Theatre was targeted in three separate break-in and robbery attempts between October 2025 and March 2026.

In two cases, offenders succeeded in gaining access while audiences were watching performances and staff were at work, stealing both professional equipment and personal belongings.

The theatre said it had also faced regular problems with groups of teenagers entering the building without permission, taking items from the bar and intimidating staff.

According to the theatre, a recent security review identified three blind spots in the current CCTV system, which the theatre plans to address with new wide-angle cameras covering key access points.

The total cost of the improvements is £8,747, including £780 for CCTV upgrades and £7,967 for door improvements.

The additional measures would reduce opportunities for crime and improve public safety, the theatre said.

The funding bid was due to be heard by councillors on Monday.
