Kimberly Guilfoyle, nominee to be an ambassador to Greece, arrives for her Senate Foreign Relations Committee nomination hearing on July 9, 2025.

Days before her confirmation hearing last year, U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle asked one of President Trump’s donors to wire her American Express account $100,000, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

“You could just send it here. It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” she wrote to Eric Deters on Signal, the Journal reported . “Please.”

Guilfoyle also sent Deters instructions on how to wire money to her American Express account and called the Trump donor twice, according to the outlet. The then-nominee to lead the U.S. Embassy asked Deters to wire her the money on July 3, 2025, six days before her confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The panel greenlighted her nomination in a 13-9 vote, and the full Senate confirmed her nomination via a 51-47 tally in September of last year.

Guilfoyle, the ex-wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), was engaged to Donald Trump Jr. until the two broke up in 2024. The Hill has reached out to the White House for comment on the Journal’s report.

Deters, who has run for governor of Kentucky and for Congress, is the former co-owner of Snappy Tomato Pizza. The Kentucky Bar Association has suspended him twice, the Journal reported.

In 2022, Deters donated $125,000 to the MAGA Inc. super PAC, according to data from the Federal Election Commission.

When Guilfoyle asked Deters to wire her the money, he shot her down, saying it would cost him his marriage.

“Your needing $100,000 urgent unfortunately is not going to work,” Deters reportedly wrote to Guilfoyle. “I can’t do this without getting a divorce.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to comment on the story, telling reporters in Greece he does not “even know if it’s true or not.”

Rubio said, “I’m not going to comment on a story that literally posted a few hours ago.”

The Journal also recently reported on Guilfoyle allegedly promoting a Greek company whose lobbyist traveled alongside her for meetings with foreign governments in the Balkans.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations panel, sent Rubio a letter last week asking him to review the report’s details .

“Such actions do not serve U.S. credibility overseas and risk undermining U.S. diplomacy,” Shaheen wrote to her former Senate colleague, referencing the report.
