Bank unions call off 3-day strike after assurances, IBA to study demands

NEW DELHI: Bank unions called off their proposed three-day strike just before midnight after the Indian Banks Association agreed to look into their demands."A high-level committee of IBA and UFBU (United Forum of Bank Unions) will be formed immediately to deliberate on the issue of declaring the remaining Saturdays as holidays. This committee will explore, all possible alternatives; discuss with all stakeholders, and work out a solution acceptable to all stakeholders and, more importantly, the customers," a late night communication said.Unions want a five-day work week, which is being resisted by banks as it may inconvenience customers.The late-night announcement came after what turned out to be a working Sunday for state-run bank employees as govt ordered branches to stay open so that customers are not inconvenienced.Get the latest India News and Live updates.
