‘If police turn predator, what can one do’: MLA after 2 cops, 2 CRPF men held for ‘gang-rape’ at his UP farmhouse

AMROHA: “If the police department turns predator, what can one do?” asked Uttarakhand MLA Umesh Sharma while responding to allegations that four policemen, including two CRPF personnel, allegedly gang-raped a 25-year-old woman at his farmhouse in Amroha’s Hasanpur area.The four accused — CRPF inspector Lalaram Yadav, CRPF head constable Mohit Singh, Uttar Pradesh Police sub-inspector Sanjay Tomar and constable Pramod — were arrested after the woman approached police alleging that she was sexually assaulted at the farmhouse on Monday night.The farmhouse, owned by Sharma, who is the MLA from Khanpur in Uttarakhand’s Haridwar district, is located on the Atrasi-Hasanpur road. According to the police complaint, the group allegedly entered the property after threatening the caretaker.Reacting to the allegations on social media, Sharma said he was not present at the farmhouse when the incident allegedly occurred. He said he was in Landhora, Khanpur, attending a roadshow and a public programme from 6.30pm to 11pm and claimed that evidence of his presence was available on social media.The MLA also questioned how a caretaker could have prevented police personnel from entering the property. “If a local thana’s police officer comes with two CRPF personnel, will not the caretaker open the gates? What options does he have?” he said.Sharma added, “And if the police department turns predator, what can one do?”What caretaker told policeThe farmhouse caretaker, Ramniwas, told police that he received several calls from a person identified as Parvinder, who allegedly told him that SSI Naresh Rana had arranged accommodation at the property for officials from the Union home ministry who were supposedly visiting for an inquiry.Ramniwas said Rana also contacted him and asked him to send the farmhouse location through WhatsApp.According to his statement, when he reached the farmhouse at around 10.13pm, he found Sanjay Tomar, a police constable, a CRPF inspector and a CRPF head constable at the property, along with a woman.Ramniwas said he asked the group to speak to the owner before entering the farmhouse. He alleged that Tomar abused and threatened him, saying he could be killed or sent to jail. Fearing the threats, the caretaker said he left the property.Woman's allegationAccording to the woman's complaint, she had travelled from Fatehabad in Haryana to Amroha after an acquaintance invited her to visit religious sites.She allegedly met CRPF head constable Mohit Singh in Sonipat on Monday. The two then travelled to Meerut, where they picked up CRPF inspector Lalaram Yadav before travelling to Hasanpur.At Hasanpur, they allegedly met Sanjay Tomar, who was posted at Hasanpur police station.The woman alleged that after they reached the farmhouse, constable Pramod brought food and liquor. She told police that Mohit, Lalaram and Sanjay subsequently sexually assaulted her.She alleged that when Pramod later attempted to assault her, she pushed him away and locked herself inside a room. She then called police at around 6am on Tuesday.Amroha SP Lakhan Singh Yadav confirmed that an FIR had been registered under Section 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for gang rape and that all four accused had been taken into custody.Tomar and Pramod have been suspended, with a departmental inquiry initiated against them.
