International Friendship Committee celebrates 60 years

WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — 60 years ago, the Junior League of Wichita Falls started its International Friendship Committee, creating lifelong relationships between Wichita Falls and Germany.

On September 10, the Mayor declared 60 years of friendship and cultural exchange between the Junior League of Wichita Falls and the German military community.

The partnership grew out of the League's previous involvement with the Allied Student Program, where League members welcomed international military students and their families to the city in 1961.

In 1981, the program became a Euro-NATO joint Jet Pilot Training Program, which remains the world's only multi-nationally manned and managed training program.

The International Friendship Committee continues to be the Junior League of Wichita Falls' longest-running community project.

The committee continues to welcome ENJJPT personnel and their families through fellowship, cultural exchange and community engagement.

"Sixty years of friendship is something truly special and I am incredibly proud that the Junior League of Wichita Falls has been part of this relationship from the very beginning," Isha Howerton, Junior League of Wichita Falls President, said. "What started with League members simply opening their homes and their hearts to families who were far from their own has grown into a tradition that has connected generations of people across two countries."

Howerton said this is a beautiful example of the difference we can make when we choose to show up for others.

"The friendships created through this committee have reached far beyond Wichita Falls and it is an honor to celebrate the women who have carried this tradition forward for 60 years and to know that we get to be part of continuing that legacy," Howerton said.

To celebrate 60 years, the International Friendship Committee will host many of its cherished traditions throughout the year, including its Tailgate, Thanksgiving celebration and Spring Picnic.

Special anniversary initiatives will also take place, such as a museum exhibit and commemorative biographical video, attending special events hosted by the German Air Force and collaborating on additional programs that celebrate six decades of friendship between Wichita Falls and Germany.

"Planning for this 60th anniversary has been a true labor of love because bond-building efforts mean the world to the Junior League, our Texoma community and our NATO allies," Melissa Nikolatsopoulos, IFC Co-Chair, said. "Over my three years as Co-Chair, I've seen firsthand how simple acts of hospitality turn international neighbors into lifelong family."

Nikolatsopoulos said the German Air Force, personnel, their families and student pilots offer a unique richness to Wichita Falls and return a home-away-from-home experience at Sheppard AFB

"Reaching six decades of shared heritage, culture and trust proves that while oceans may separate us, the genuine warmth of Texoma hospitality creates a friendship that stands the test of time," Nikolatsopoulos said.

The committee remains committed to carrying its legacy forward by welcoming new generations of League members into one of the organization's most distinctive and enduring community programs.
