Canadian man dies after being struck by a plane at Montreal airport

An airport worker was struck and killed by a plane pushing back from the gate at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport Monday night after he reportedly tripped and fell on the tarmac.

According to Pax News , the aircraft was a French Bee Airbus A350 bound for Paris. About 7:30 p.m., the man, later identified by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) as 39-year-old Oscar Robayo, was struck by the plane as it moved.

Radio-Canada spoke to a witness who said the man went under the plane and that people began screaming once they saw what was happening.

Robayo sustained what police described as "serious injuries" and was rushed to the hospital by emergency crews. He was later pronounced dead.

The IAM said Robayo was a ramp agent with Samsic Airport, a company that operates out of the airport providing passenger services and baggage handling. ADM Aéroports de Montréal, which operates the airport, issued a statement after the accident.

"The ADM Aéroports de Montréal team is deeply saddened by the loss of a member of the YUL airport community, an employee of Samsic, following an accident that occurred while carrying out their duties," the airport operator said.

The company added that assistance and support were being provided to employees and passengers who witnessed the accident. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating.
