Ben Affleck covered plenty of ground in his recent Variety interview, from the future of movie stars to Batman and his new film Animals. The 54-year-old spoke quietly to Variety about the loss of both his parents this year and the lessons that came with his mother’s final months. In the conversation he described a quiet comfort that can arrive with the death of parents at his age. “One of the things you grapple with at my age when parents die is there’s a comfort and awareness in knowing this is how it’s supposed to go,” he said. “When I go, it will be hard for my children, but none of us want it any other way.” He recalled his mother’s words near the end: “God, I thought 84 years would seem longer.” His own reply was simple. “I bet, because I thought 54 would seem longer.”A reminder about limited timeThat exchange stayed with him. “That’s what we get,” Affleck said. “We get this much time, and it’s a reminder not to put anything off or fix it later. It’s more about how you show up every day with everybody else.” He added that he felt lucky his mother did not face a more painful decline earlier in life.An adult relationship that arrived in timeWhile asked if he had said what he needed to, Affleck answered quickly. “My gosh, yeah. She’s an amazing woman.” Going through her belongings showed him a full life that existed apart from him. “You see this woman lived an entire lifetime that had nothing to do with me,” he said. The two had reached a stage of honesty that once felt impossible. “We got to have this nice adult relationship; we were really honest, and I was able to have discussions with her that I didn’t even imagine I would be able to when I was younger.”Choosing how the final chapter lookedHis mother faced a cancer diagnosis with clear-eyed decisions. “She had this cancer diagnosis, and a great lesson was the proactive way she said, ‘I’m going to make a decision about how much treatment I want to do and how that’s going to impact my life.’ She made her choices.” She wanted to keep seeing friends and stayed committed to being a grandmother. She refused to move to Los Angeles, kept her own routines, and still boarded a plane for any of her five grandchildren. How the loss settles into ordinary daysAs revealed by Affleck, the experience has shaped the way he moves through his current life. He spoke of shared custody, school pickups, and quiet dinners when the kids agree to stay at the table. “I have nothing salacious or all that interesting in my life,” he said. “I work hard, and then I go home and pick up the kids from school… They have a great thing with their mom, for whom I’m also really, really grateful.”The reflections sat quietly beside talk of work and business. In an industry that often rewards performance, the most lasting notes Affleck shared that day came from simply paying attention at home.
