Houthis say Saudi strikes hit prison in Yemen

Houthi militia in Yemen reported fresh Saudi airstrikes in al-Jawf province, resulting in 14 casualties, including prisoners trapped under rubble.

Video footage released by the Houthis showed extensive damage to a prison hit in the attacks, with 35 inmates present at the time of the strike.

Yemeni government forces have announced a military operation to retake Houthi-controlled territory in al-Jawf, with clashes intensifying on multiple fronts in recent days.

Yemen's Houthi militia reported fresh Saudi airstrikes on its positions in the north-west of the country, with 14 people killed or injured, according to Houthi-controlled health authorities.

Saudi Arabia carried out airstrikes in al-Jawf province, the Iran-backed militia said. There was no comment from Riyadh.

A prison was also hit in the attacks, according to Houthi sources. Several inmates were taken to hospital, while others were believed to be trapped under the rubble.

There were 35 prisoners in the facility at the time of the strike, the sources said.

Video footage released by the Houthis showed extensive damage to parts of the building. The reports could not be independently verified.

The "Saudi aggression against Yemen" would not go unanswered, Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said.

Fighting has been taking place between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis in al-Jawf. Government forces have announced a military operation aimed at retaking Houthi-controlled territory, with clashes intensifying on several fronts in recent days.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been fighting Yemen's Saudi-backed government for more than a decade.

An informal truce had largely held since 2022, but fighting in Yemen has flared up again in connection with the war involving Iran.
