China punishes 10 for spreading ‘fake’ flood toll

Chinese police punished 10 people accused of spreading false information online about the Gyirong flood disaster, including claims that thousands had died and official casualty figures were being concealed. The cybersecurity department of China’s ministry of public security said most cases involved fabricated or exaggerated death tolls circulated online. One user, surnamed Liu, claimed over 3,000 people had died, while another shared a post saying, “The news reports 1,400 fatalities, but in reality 3,000 people had previously been reported missing.”Missing kin asked to give DNAKin of people missing after the Nepal floods have been asked to provide DNA samples to help identify bodies and remains found in the disaster zone. Nepal Police asked parents and children of those still unaccounted for to submit DNA samples along with details of the missing person.
