Fresh attacks kill four in Ukraine as Kiev targets Russian industry

At least four people were killed and dozens injured in overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine, with residential buildings and industrial targets being hit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of continuous attacks on towns and villages, resulting in casualties including a five-month-old baby and individuals with limited mobility.

Ukraine retaliated by attacking and damaging industrial targets in Russia, including chemical plants important for the production of tactical and ballistic missiles, as part of its defensive campaign against the ongoing Russian invasion.

At least four people were killed and dozens more injured in overnight Russian attacks on Ukraine, local authorities reported on Saturday, while Ukraine said it attacked and damaged two industrial targets in Russia.

In a post on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of attacking towns and villages virtually non-stop.

A drone strike on a residential area in Zaporizhzhia resulted in the death of a woman and a man, he wrote, adding that six people were injured. There were further casualties in an attack on an unnamed company in Zaporizhzhia.

In Odessa on the Black Sea, at least 37 people were injured, according to Zelensky's post. Among those injured was a five-month-old baby.

Images released by the authorities showed a damaged multi-storey residential building.

In Chornomorsk, in the Odessa region, Zelensky wrote that 11 people were injured in a drone attack on a hotel, "including six with limited mobility."

Zelensky: Lack of adequate support from strong powers 'frustrating'

In Zelensky's hometown of Kryvyi Rih, a missile struck critical infrastructure. Zelensky reported one person had been killed, and three others injured there. Earlier, the governor of the south-eastern Ukrainian region of Dnipropetrovsk, Olexander Hanzha, had reported two deaths and four injuries following an attack on a factory.

Zelensky called on world leaders to do more to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian attacks.

"When the Russians so blatantly turn ordinary people into targets of their terrorist attacks, it is frustrating that the response from the world's strongest powers does not match the level of Russia's escalation," he wrote.

The Defence Ministry in Moscow confirmed the attacks. It said that metal industry companies in Zaporizhzhia and Kryvyi Rih, which manufactured products for military purposes, had been targeted.

In the Odessa region, the targets included port infrastructure and an important facility used for the unloading and storage of military goods, the ministry said. The information cannot be independently verified.

Ukraine claims strikes on Russian industry

Ukraine meanwhile said it had attacked and damaged several targets in Russia, with Zelensky reporting on Facebook on Saturday that long-range drones had struck two chemical plants - one in Togliatti in the south-eastern Samara region and the other in the Perm region in the foothills of the Urals.

A fire was detected on the premises of the plant in Togliatti, the General Staff in Kiev said earlier on Saturday.

The company specializes in the production of synthetic rubbers, which are important for the use of tactical and ballistic missiles, according to the statement.

Early on Saturday, Russian regional governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported a major Ukrainian drone attack on Telegram, without providing details about the target.

The mayor of Togliatti, Ilya Sukhih, said that one person had been taken to hospital following a massive attack on the city. Several multi-storey residential buildings have been damaged, he said.

Unverified images and videos purporting to show a large cloud of smoke in Togliatti were circulating on social media. The city is located around 750 kilometres from Russia's border with Ukraine.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a large-scale Russian invasion for more than four and a half years with Western assistance. As part of its defensive campaign, it repeatedly targets locations deep within Russian territory.
