Six people were shot on Halloween night along a crowded stretch of Main Street in Newark, Delaware, sending people running for safety as police rushed to the scene. The shooting happened on the sidewalk along Main Street right after 11 p.m., across from Choate Street, near the University of Delaware. All six victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment. The university had sent out an emergency alert at 11:29 p.m. notifying the community of the incident and warning them to avoid the area. Witnesses said Main Street was packed with college students and others celebrating Halloween when gunshots rang out, triggering panic among the crowds. “People were running, screaming. They had helicopters in the sky flashing lights on people. The people were speeding down the road. It got chaotic like quick,” witness Jayden Ngalim said. Another witness, Nathaniel Davila, said he was standing nearby when he heard what sounded like popping noises. “I was right there on the corner and all we hear is like sharp pops. People, we’re thinking at first it’s the cars and then everyone starts running,” Davila said. Landon Singleton, who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting, said that he rushed to help after seeing multiple people lying wounded in the street. “I immediately just no second thought. I didn’t think of anything else. Didn’t even think about myself like my life. Anything. I just ran straight towards there just to help,” Singleton said. Singleton added that he noticed one young victim lying on his back, surrounded by friends who appeared unsure of what to do. Singleton said he immediately approached the victim, removed his shirt, folded it and pressed it against the gunshot wound. “He squeezed my hand, like his like last hope,” Singleton said. Singleton added, “It was very, very chaotic, very intense.” Main Street began reopening around 3 a.m. Sunday following the shooting. Newark police have not released information about the victims’ conditions or said whether anyone has been arrested. Police are asking anyone with photos or video of the incident to submit them through the department’s evidence portal. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact Detective Paige Klein at 302-366-7100, ext. 3480, or pklein@newark.de.us, or visit the department’s tips page.
