Delta flight makes emergency landing due to smoke in cabin

A Boston-bound Delta Air Lines flight from Barcelona made an emergency landing in Portugal after smoke was detected inside the cabin on Sunday.

Delta Flight 251 made its stop in at Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport in Porto, Portugal, due to what a Delta spokesperson told The Hill was a mechanical issue. A Delta official said fumes were detected in the cabin and, after landing, Portuguese emergency responders treated passengers.

The plane left Barcelona at 3:15 p.m. and landed in Porto at 5:45 p.m. local time, according to the flight-tracking site Flightradar24 .

Eight passengers were treated on the tarmac, with three others hospitalized for treatment, Portuguese emergency officials told Reuters . The flight had 283 passengers and 13 crew members.

“The flight landed safely, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels as we work to get them to Boston as safely and quickly as possible,” the Delta spokesperson said in a statement.
