President Trump and Vice President Vance are placing the blame on immigration for the riots in France that grew violent over the weekend.
“The migrants have taken over France,” Trump wrote Monday morning on Truth Social. “They must CLOSE THE BORDERS, FAST!”
Vance over the weekend said, “Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion.”
“They ignored fundamental questions of assimilation and compatibility. They were told it would lead to this and they didn’t listen,” he wrote in a social media post that reposted a video of a French building burning.
“I pray that France, a beautiful country of amazing people, will stop this madness before more of its landmarks burn,” he continued. ”And I hope Americans are paying attention. This is the future congressional Democrats seek for your country.”
Demonstrations that began with students protesting deteriorating schools and teacher shortages snowballed into protests for a multitude of issues including cost-of-living and anger toward French President Emmanuel Macron.
They came to a head over the weekend, turning violent as some half-million people took the streets. Some masked-clad people battled with police while setting cars and buildings on fire.
While French officials haven’t mentioned immigration as a factor in the demonstrations or riots, they have blamed a left-leaning party.
Macron has said those who have tried “to bring down the republic will be held accountable.”
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu on Monday accused the “ultra-left movement” of “orchestrating profound disorder in the country leading up to the presidential election,” according to reports.
France has its presidential election in April 2027. Marine Le Pen has appeared to be the front-runner. She is the candidate for the National Rally, France’s far-right political party.
Trump and Vance have both publicly supported Le Pen, who has advocated for the deportation of immigrants who illegally entered France.
