As a style editor, I've learned that the best time to start planning a fall wardrobe is before everyone else does. This doesn't mean I buy all-new items on a quarterly basis — in fact, some cold-weather staples, like a solid pair of jeans and a good oversized sweater, will remain wardrobe staples season after season. My planning is pretty simple — I take inventory of what I like (and don't like) about my current wardrobe, keep an eye on emerging trends and decide which new pieces are worth adding.

I've worked at various publications and fashion brands for more than six years, and one of my favorite parts of the job is tracking runway shows, red carpets and social media to spot the next big trends. Based on what I've seen so far, many of the biggest fall 2026 fashion trends are nostalgic revivals or fresh takes on pieces you may already own. I also spoke with fashion experts and stylists about the styles they're most excited to wear this season and why they think these trends are poised to take off.

Once the weather cools down, it's time to start layering — and stylists recommend a classic trench for a polished look when temperatures dip. "Trench coats are a wardrobe staple that has continuously seen updates since last year," says trend forecaster Kendall Becker . While beige and tan are classic trench colors, Becker adds that navy and chocolate brown are also trending, along with leather and suede detailing.

If you're looking to spice up a classic sweater this fall, there's a controversial 2010s trend that's making its way back into the spotlight — the peplum waistline. Even if you weren't a fan of the look 10 years ago, fashion expert and Afterpay and Cash App ambassador Zanna Roberts Rassi notes that the fall 2026 version of peplum feels less overwhelming and "much more refined." She adds, "Silhouettes are everything this season, and peplum hemlines are an easy way to define the waist and create a beautiful shape."

"It creates a really flattering shape while still feeling effortless and wearable," adds Blair Moore , founder and CEO of personal styling company Be Styled Co. "I'd pair a peplum cardigan or sweater with straight-leg or wider-leg denim and a simple flat or loafer."

"For those who have already found their favorite denim silhouette but still want a sense of newness, changing up the hue to a near-neutral is the perfect solution," says Becker. "Try a tonal look of shades of all greens or browns for this trend." You can treat olive, tan, brown and khaki as neutrals and pair them with most colors, according to Moore. She suggests pairing your earth-toned denim with a classic trench and loafers or a plaid blazer.

Suede has been trending hard for the past few seasons and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. "A suede sneaker instantly reads more elevated than your standard pair," says Stacey Oliver , personal shopper and VIP stylist at Bloomingdale's. "The texture adds richness." Moore adds, "The key is choosing a low-profile silhouette rather than a chunky sneaker, which will look and feel more current and versatile."

According to Brendan Cannon , fashion stylist at Cannon Media Group, chocolate brown is having a moment — especially dark brown suede. "The hues of dark chocolate bring an instant sense of warmth and depth to cool-weather dressing," Cannon says. "Deep, espresso-hued suede is dominating over slouchy shoulder bags for fall 2026."

As for what colors to pair it with, Moore suggests "other rich fall colors like burgundy, olive green and cream." And don't worry about that old rule of not mixing brown and black: "That combination is one of the most modern things you can wear right now," says Moore.
