President Trump over the weekend said he was “thinking of” renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, a move that comes after the president’s previous moves to rebrand geographical features.

During a rally in Tennessee on Saturday, the president discussed his renaming efforts for Lake Ontario and the Gulf of Mexico.

“So, we need a river, we need an ocean. So, I was thinking of either the Atlantic or the Pacific,” Trump told the crowd at the rally. “We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the America,’ something like that.”

In late August, Trump signed an executive order formally changing the name of Lake Ontario, which shares a name with the Canadian province, to “Lake America” amid trade tensions with Canada.

“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump told reporters at the time.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pushed back on the lake renaming , explaining the history of Lake Ontario’s Indigenous name on social media.

“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,’” Carney wrote on the social platform X at the time.

Last year, Trump also signed another executive order changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
