Virginia charity programme embezzlement ended in a four-year prison sentence for Linda Natelle Brown, a Texas woman who stole more than $1.5 million from the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign, the officially sanctioned non-profit charity fundraising scheme for the state’s more than 120,000 government employees. She was sentenced on 13 May 2026 for taking money that donors had earmarked for charities of their choice. The thefts began in January 2019 and continued until August 2023, while she worked as the programme’s administrator. Federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia said the stolen funds went on personal spending rather than good causes. How a state-hired administrator was trusted with donations meant for charities chosen by employeesAccording to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Virginia Department of Human Resources Management employed Brown from 2017 through 2023 to administer the programme. Employees were promised they could donate safely and easily throughout the year by credit card, mailed cheque or payroll deductions taken directly from their pay.Brown’s job was to steward those donations and pass them on to the charities each donor had designated. The sum she took came out of more than $5.3 million that state employees donated in that period.Plastic surgery, a fish pedicure in Las Vegas and luxury stays, where the donated money wentProsecutors said Brown spent $10,400 of the stolen money on a plastic surgery procedure and used charity funds to pay for a “fish pedicure” spa in Las Vegas. They said she also used donations for multiple flight tickets to destinations around the country, stays at luxury hotels, a luxury apartment in Houston, designer clothing and shoes, beauty and cosmetic products, and food and alcohol.A loan obtained through false statements was meant to cover the missing charity moneyBrown attempted to conceal the embezzlement from the programme by replenishing the stolen funds with a $494,469 business loan backed by the United States Small Business Administration. She obtained the loan by making false statements to the lender.Four years in prison and a $1,581,161 forfeiture order followed an investigation by three agenciesAt sentencing, the court also entered a money judgment forfeiture order of $1,581,161, which requires Brown to give up that sum. The Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation Washington, District of Columbia, field office, the United States Postal Inspection Service Washington Division and the Office of the Inspector General of Virginia investigated the case. Assistant United States Attorney Avi Panth prosecuted it, assisted by former Assistant United States Attorney Kashan Pathan. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
