· 264 words

Alex Murdaugh was well-known in South Carolina. He came from a long line of wealth and privilege. The family business was in the practice of law. Generations of it. He was a husband to Maggie, and father to their two sons, Buster and Paul. Everyone in those parts knew the Murdaugh family. Outside of South Carolina, you’d probably never heard of them. That all changed in 2021, when Maggie and Paul were killed on the family’s property, and the shadow of suspicion fell on Alex. In 2022, he was charged with their murders. Testimony went on for 28 days, with more than 70 witnesses. Public interest and media attention was enormous. It was called the “trial of the decade.” In the end, it took the jury about three hours to delivery its guilty verdicts. Alex was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of his wife and son. But the South Carolina State Supreme Court has now overturned those guilty verdicts. How did the case become completely undone? And what comes next for Alex Murdaugh? To find out, watch the full episode “In the Matter of Alex Murdaugh,” available now on Peacock. In it, Craig Melvin speaks with key insiders about the latest developments, including Murdaugh’s defense attorneys and the South Carolina attorney general.
