Jersey solar panels: Rise in number of homes generating power

There has been a rise in the number of homes generating electricity, typically through solar panels, according to a government report.

The Jersey Energy Trends Report , which tracks trends in the island's energy supply, showed 99 more homes and businesses were generating electricity at the end of 2025 compared to the beginning of the same year.

There has also been an increase in use of biofuels as more firms and households are starting to more away from fossil fuels, the report shows.

Energy generated from the private site accounts for 3% of the island's overall supply, with the rest imported, the report states.

This is the first time the government tracked private homes.

Researchers found 641 private microgeneration sites by the end of 2025, up from 540 at the start of the same year when experts began monitoring.

Last year there were 2.4 GWh of electricity sold to Jersey Electricity for wider distribution as part of the public supply, according to the report.

This represented 5% of the electricity produced on the island and less than 0.5% of the total primary supply of electricity.

Of all the energy used, 37% was for residential use, 34% for predominantly road transportation and 29% for commercial, government and agriculture use.

Energy consumption by the commercial sector had remained largely level during the last five years. It dropped by 9% in the road sector, but had increased by 59% in the air and marine sector, the report stated.
