Solar farm planned for site near Nether Poppleton near York

Plans for a solar farm to be built on a site north of York have been submitted.

The proposals would see the 84-hectare (208 acre) site, which would generate 57MW of power, built off Newlands Lane near the A59 at Upper Poppleton.

Applicants BSR Energy said the panels would be installed across several fields currently used for farming and that some isolated homes were located nearby.

In a statement they said the solar farm would be in place for about 40 years and was "not expected to result in any significant adverse effects or wide-ranging environmental impacts".

The planning application, submitted to York Council, said the site would connect to the existing Poppleton 275kV substation if approved.

Panels would be mounted on fixed frames and made of high-transparency solar glass with an anti-reflective coating to minimise glint and glare, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service .

Plans stated the development would include comprehensive landscaping to keep its impact on the surrounding area to a minimum.

The applicants stated: "Whilst the proposal may give rise to some limited and localised environmental effects, these will be appropriately managed through the design and layout of the development, the incorporation of suitable mitigation measures, and the adoption of best practice during construction and operation."
