Energy drinks linked to higher risk of cardiac arrest in young adults, study finds Energy drinks and stimulant-packed supplements may put young adults at greater risk for heart problems, including cardiac arrest, according to new research presented at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting. The research looked at more than 28,000 reports sent to a Food and Drug Administration database over eight years. It found that cardiac arrest was reported about 11 times more often with energy drinks and supplements containing caffeine and stimulants — such as preworkout powders or caffeine pills — than with other FDA-regulated products. Adults ages 18 to 34, typically at low risk for heart problems, made up almost half of the reports. The pattern held for both men and women. Here’s what else to know. Staff Pick: 11 data centers and 264 diesel generators surround this school. Is it safe? Loudoun County, Virginia, known as “data center alley,” is at the heart of America’s rapid AI infrastructure buildout. There, we found an elementary school surrounded by 11 data centers, with two more on the way. Data centers require an enormous amount of electricity. To keep running during power outages or emergencies, they rely on highly-polluting backup diesel generators. We dug into state records and found that the Department of Environmental Quality had issued permits allowing 264 generators to operate at the facilities within a half-mile of the school. Just one of these typical generators, an expert calculated, emits as much pollution as 100 18-wheeler trucks. Neighbors and parents told us they were worried about the smoke and fumes.
