A two-year-old boy has died after being struck by a vehicle in County Limerick.

The collision, involving a Jeep and the child, happened in the Abbeycourt area of Rathkeale shortly before 16:00 BST on Saturday.

The boy was taken to University Hospital Limerick with serious injuries but was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí (Irish Police) said the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene.

A man in his 30s was later arrested at a different location on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

He was taken to a Garda Station in Co. Limerick to provide a blood/urine sample and was later released pending analysis of that test.

Gardaí say the investigation is ongoing.
