‘I’m not special human, cannot work 24X7’: Varanasi cop resigns

LUCKNOW: A police constable posted at Ramnagar police station in Varanasi sparked concern among senior officers after he posted a resignation letter in the station’s official WhatsApp group, saying he did not possess “special human powers” to work round the clock.Constable Devgan Kumar Chauhan posted the letter on the evening of Sept 7, requesting that he be relieved from service. The unusual wording of the resignation immediately drew the attention of senior police officials, who summoned both the station house officer and the constable to ascertain the circumstances behind the move.In the letter addressed to the police commissioner, Chauhan wrote, “I am currently not capable of working 24x7 every day. Since I do not possess the powers of any special human, I request you to relieve me from my duties.”According to police officials, the constable had been under mental stress after being repeatedly assigned duty with a patient undergoing treatment at a trauma centre for several days. He was also reportedly facing personal problems at home.The constable also raised concerns over the manner in which duties were being assigned at the police station. He accused a head constable, referred to as a diwan, of irregularities in duty allocation.Chauhan claimed that some personnel considered close to the head constable were given comparatively easier schedules or rest, while attempts were made to assign round-the-clock duties to other constables.His resignation letter subsequently became a talking point within the department, as it highlighted concerns surrounding prolonged duty hours and the mental pressure faced by police personnel.ACP Vijay Pratap Singh said the constable had gone home after completing his duty on the night of September 5 but was informed the following day that he would again have to accompany the patient.The officer said Chauhan was also facing difficulties due to domestic issues and appeared to have taken the decision to submit his resignation while under stress.“Later, during a phone conversation, he made it clear that he wanted to continue in service,” the ACP said.Following the intervention of senior officers, Chauhan was counselled, and his request for voluntary relief from service was not accepted.
