India A's squads for the home series against Australia A carry genuine selection weight this time around, given the tour doubles as a final trial run for several Test hopefuls ahead of next year's Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The BCCI announced the squads on Wednesday, with two different captains handed charge across the multi-day and one-day legs.

Devdutt Padikkal leads the four-day squad, with Sai Sudharsan as his deputy, fresh off a series in which both were central to India's Test win over Sri Lanka. Ruturaj Gaikwad takes charge of the one-day side, with Padikkal doubling up as his vice-captain across formats.

The inclusion of Hardik Pandya in the one-day squad, subject to fitness clearance, is the most eye-catching name on the list, offering the all-rounder a route back into competitive cricket after his prolonged injury lay-off. Australia A are yet to announce their own squad for the series.

The presence of former IPL player Laxmipathy Balaji as the head coach is also guaranteed to boost their chances against the Aussies.
