After 'big talk' on 'Super Intelligence' with Xi, Trump rules out joint US-China effort to advance AI

United States president Donald Trump ruled out join efforts with China to advance AI after the two met and held discussions earlier this week, as Xi Jinping visited Washington.While Trump said that both leaders agreed on renaming it to "Super intelligence", SI (a name Trump has pushed for recently), he dismissed the idea of integration. "We had a big talk on SI," Trump told reporters at the White House, using his preferred name of super intelligence."What they want to do is stop our progress because we're leading China by a lot, and we're going to keep it that way. We didn't spend that much time talking about it," he added.Defending his stance, the US president reiterated, "he did not want to "integrate" AI initiatives with China because of US dominance. "I would rather not integrate because we're leading by a lot," he said, adding: "When you're leading, you don't open it up to each other".This comes a day after Trump hailed "productive meeting" between him and Xi where he said "everyone" agreed on the renaming. The two leaders agreed to use the term “super intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence” for applicable emerging technologies.The US and China also agreed on establishing the US-China Super Intelligence Dialogue to exchange views on the risks and benefits linked to such technologies, with the next exchange scheduled for November 2026. They also agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving super intelligence. The two countries also agreed to launch the dialogue on AI under an eight-point consensus reached after bilateral talks, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.You use AI every day.
