Alderney Airport runway rebuild delay 'very concerning'

A politician wants to get "spades in the ground" to get a "vital" airport project moving forwards.

Alex Snowdon said news from the States of Guernsey regarding the rebuilding of Alderney Airport's ageing runway being pushed back from next year to 2028 was "very concerning".

The Policy and Resources Committee said further design work was needed for the £24m scheme after it received regulatory advice and feedback from the States of Alderney.

Snowdon, who is an Alderney States member, said the rebuild could not afford to be pushed back further as it was a "crucial" project for the island.

"We do need to get spades in the ground and get this project moving forwards as it's been going on for years," Snowdon said.

He added he had not seen the delay happening and it felt like the issue was "going round in circles".

"I didn't think there would be this much of a delay when we had such a keen debate earlier in the year for delivery of the project for 2027.

"But unfortunately, we are where we are and it's really important that we do not see further delays and that 2028 is locked in for this vital project."
