NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra on Wednesday claimed that BJP workers pelted eggs at her in her constituency in West Bengal, and took a dig at Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta over his earlier remarks on her.Moitra shared a video on X in which she appeared to have been hit by eggs. Referring to Justice Datta’s earlier comments, she wrote: “Big shout out to Hon’ble Justice Dipankar Datta ! MiLord - I came to my constituency for a meeting informing West Bengal police & BJP workers with their help pelted eggs on me. True to your advice I faced them as a freedom fighter faced bullets.”The Supreme Court had earlier refused to entertain Moitra’s plea challenging a Calcutta high court order directing her to appear before police in a hate speech case.During the hearing, senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for Moitra, told the bench that she should be allowed to appear before the investigating officer virtually. He said Moitra had faced threats of eggs being thrown at her during an earlier visit to the police station and that eggs were later actually thrown. The bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Sheel Nagu declined to interfere with the high court’s direction asking Moitra, the Krishnanagar MP, to join the investigation.“You are a member of Parliament. Having taken the plunge into politics, you fear eggs? When our freedom fighters have taken bullets on their chest?” the bench observed, according to news agency PTI.The bench also said, “These are applications that should not come before this court at all.”Moitra’s counsel subsequently withdrew the petition after the bench indicated that it would not grant relief. The petition was then dismissed as withdrawn.Get the latest India News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.
