Bid to remember Force 135 leader behind Channel Island liberation

A campaign to help remember a "significant World War Two commander" is under way after his final resting place was discovered earlier this year.

Brig Alfred Snow was the senior British officer responsible for the liberation of the Channel Islands in 1945 after five years of Nazi rule.

The location of his final resting place remained unknown until earlier this summer , when it was discovered his ashes had been scattered in Taunton, Somerset.

The British Channel Islands WWII Remembrance Campaign said it was now fundraising to create "appropriate remembrance in Somerset".

Campaign leader Kev South said a public fundraising appeal, events, tour and dedicated website would form part of a "co-ordinated national campaign to ensure his place in British and Channel Islands history is finally recognised".

It comes after the Bailiff of Jersey and the Bailiff of Guernsey agreed Brigadier Snow should receive "appropriate remembrance" .

He commanded Force 135, the British and Commonwealth formation of about 6,000 tasked with liberating the islands after almost five years of German occupation, in Operation Nestegg - the planned peaceful liberation of the islands.

After inquiries with Somerset Council and Taunton Crematorium, the remembrance campaign group learned his ashes were scattered within the town's Garden of Rest.

The group discovered he died in 1983 at the age of 85.

A spokesperson for Somerset Council, which manages the crematorium, previously said no memorials were allowed on the lawn.
