Ex-Congress minister's wife elected sarpanch unopposed for 7th time in Rajasthan village

JAISALMER: Bhikhidevi, wife of former Congress minister Hemaram Choudhary, was elected unopposed Friday as sarpanch of Virendra Nagar gram panchayat in Baytoo panchayat samiti for a seventh consecutive term, ahead of the first phase of Panchayati Raj elections in Barmer district.Bhikhidevi has held the post for 35 years. No rival candidate remained in the fray after the completion of the nomination and withdrawal process, paving the way for her unopposed election.Thanking the villagers for their continued support, Bhikhidevi said she would strive to live up to their trust and continue working for the village’s development and welfare.In another unopposed election, Dhan Singh Mausari was elected sarpanch of Mausari gram panchayat under Gadra Road panchayat samiti. He was the only candidate to file a nomination for the post. All seven ward panch members in the gram panchayat were also elected unopposed.Polling for sarpanch and ward panch posts in the remaining gram panchayats of the district will be held Saturday from 7 am to 6 pm.
