A new mural in the north of the Isle of Man aims to "celebrate and elevate" a famous Manx poet, the artist behind the project has said.

Located in Parliament Street, Ramsey, the five-metre (16ft) high mural depicts Josephine Kermode, who published her poems, plays and stories under the name Cushag 100 years ago.

Born in 1852, just two doors down from where the mural has been created, Kermode's poems and plays continue to be performed on the island.

Illustrator Jo Davies said: "It was important for me to make an artwork that wasn't just a picture to decorate a wall but to celebrate, and literally elevate a Ramsey-born woman who made an important contribution to Manx culture."

The work incorporates one of Kermode's best-known poems, which celebrates the Manx national flower's beauty and place in Manx folklore.

"If, like me, people passing don't understand the Manx words I hope that they will appreciate them as things of beauty and over time begin to recognise and connect to them as part of their lives," Ramsey-based Davies said.

Having published her first poetry book in 1907, Kermode created a steady stream of poems and plays throughout her lifetime.

James Franklin, from Culture Vannin said: "Although it is certainly a beautiful image which enhances the experience of Parliament Street, this mural is so much more.

"In confidently placing Cushag, her poetry and the Manx language at the centre of it all, this piece by Jo Davies empowers us to connect to one of the island's great poets whilst tying us to the treasure of its language and the sense of place."

The mural is accompanied by a QR code where those passing by can listen to the poem in both English and Manx.

It is part of a year-long celebration of the Manx language, which aims to create a lasting boost to the island's native tongue.
