‘No Conclusions’ Made as Investigation into Flight Attendant Mom’s Death During Layover Continues, Police Say

The family of Jenny Lupton, the Southwest flight attendant found dead during a layover in Hawaii last week, continues to wait for answers about her death.

In a news release shared with PEOPLE on Monday, Aug. 24, the Honolulu Police Department said their unattended death investigation began in Waikiki on Thursday, Aug. 20.

"The HPD Homicide Detail is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her death and is working closely with her family," police said. "At this time, no conclusions have been made regarding the manner of death."

"This is a thorough investigation that will take time," police continued. "Detectives are conducting numerous interviews, reviewing and recovering surveillance video, and examining evidence as part of the investigative process."

Lupton, 50, of Moore, Okla., worked as a flight attendant for 29 years and was also a mom of one, according to NBC affiliate KFOR and CBS affiliate KWTV .

Family members said the Honolulu Department of the Medical Examiner contacted them, stating that Lupton appeared to have fallen from a 24th-floor balcony at her Waikiki hotel.

Her sister Tresa told KWTV that a hotel employee found Lupton's body, while KFOR reported the discovery was made on Aug. 20.

When reached for comment by PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the medical examiner's office said that the cause and manner of Lupton's death have not been determined, noting that a final determination could take several months.

Lupton was in Hawaii for work but was planning to stay for several days before returning, according to her family.

Tresa recalled receiving a text from Lupton, who had just gotten a new tattoo, hours before she was found dead. "She just went out with one of her flight attendant friends, and they danced and had a good time," Tresa said during an interview with KWTV.

Hannah Lupton, Jenny's niece, told USA Today that the family does not believe their loved one died by suicide and "are worried that there is possible foul play involved."

In a statement shared with PEOPLE on Tuesday, a spokesperson for the Oklahoma Attorney General said their "office is in contact with Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez's office to help ensure a proper investigation into Jenny Lupton's death."

"We are also in contact with the Lupton family who deserve to have answers about this tragedy," the spokesperson added.

Southwest Airlines has also offered their "condolences and support" and says they "are engaged with local authorities as they investigate."

Honolulu Police have said that in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation, authorities "will limit the release of certain information while the investigation remains ongoing."

"On behalf of Jenny Lupton's family, we ask for patience as detectives conduct this investigation and respectfully request that the family's privacy be honored during this difficult time," the department added.

Additionally, authorities asked the public to refrain from sharing unverified information.

Meanwhile, a GoFundMe created for Lupton's family has raised over $11,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
