Two boys aged 15 and 16 have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 16-year-old was seriously assaulted in Liverpool, police have said.

Officers were called to The Lutine Bell pub on Breck Road in Everton at about 14:15 BST following reports of a boy being assaulted nearby. He was taken to hospital with head and chest injuries where he remains in a serious condition.

A 37-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman have also been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All four remain in custody, Merseyside Police said.

Det Ch Insp Paula Jones said: "We are continuing to appeal for anyone who was in the area of Breck Road shortly after 14:00 and saw, heard or captured anything to please get in touch."

Jones added: "You may also live or work nearby and witnessed people running off at the time. Pass on all information and we will make the assessment."
