Trump extends invite to Putin to attend Miami G20

The Trump administration has issued a formal invitation for Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the Group of 20 summit to be held in Miami in December.

“We’ve invited President Putin to the G20,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Wednesday at a press conference on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly .

“We think it’s an opportunity for him to engage not just with the president but with other world leaders,” he continued. “We hope that’s an invitation he’ll accept. There’s an opportunity in December if that happens.”

The G20 summit will take place at the president’s golf resort, Trump National Doral Miami, from Dec. 14-15.

Rubio, who also serves as Trump’s national security adviser , also met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday. The two discussed the “Russia-Ukraine war and the U.S.-Russia bilateral relationship,” according to a readout from the State Department.

The U.S. imposed sanctions on Putin after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. But the Trump administration made an exception in August 2025 for Putin to travel to Alaska for a summit with the president.

The administration also made an exception for Russia’s sanctioned Finance Minister Anton Siluanov to attend the G20 finance ministerial in Asheville, N.C., earlier this year.

Ukraine’s allies who are part of the group bristled at Siluanov’s participation and succeeded in getting him excluded from a family photo at the event.

Trump has revived efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and has sought to put the U.S. in a more neutral negotiating position, by extending favor to Russia while appearing to impose pressure on Ukraine to make concessions to end hostilities.

The U.S. is pursuing, at least, a limited ceasefire where Russia and Ukraine agree to halt attacks on their energy infrastructure.
