New Zealand T20I squad vs India: Rachin Ravindra out, Adam Milne and Michael Bracewell return under Mitchell Santner
New Zealand's home summer kicks off with one of the most anticipated white-ball series of the year, and they've announced a 16-member group for the five-match T20I series against India.
White-ball captain Mitchell Santner will lead the squad across five T20Is beginning October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. The series spans four cities over 11 days and is the opening leg of India's comprehensive 12-match tour of New Zealand, which also includes five ODIs and two Tests.
New Zealand Cricket confirmed that more than 76,000 tickets had already been sold for the tour with a full month still to go before the first ball is bowled.
Thirteen T20 World Cup players retained; two return from injury
The selection shows a thread of continuity from New Zealand's T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year, where they reached the final before falling to India. Thirteen members of that squad have been retained, with two significant additions in the form of spin all-rounder Michael Bracewell and experienced pacer Adam Milne, both of whom missed the tournament through injury.
Milne slots into an already well-stocked pace attack alongside Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson and Jacob Duffy. Young pacers Zak Foulkes and Nathan Smith round out a seven-strong seam unit that gives New Zealand variety and depth in the format.
Ravindra ruled out of T20Is, targeting ODI return
The most significant absence from the squad is Rachin Ravindra, who has been ruled out after dislocating his right shoulder during a promotional shoot last week.
The injury is expected to keep him sidelined for around six weeks, with the target being a return to action for the ODI series beginning November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland.
Ben Sears, meanwhile, was not considered due to ongoing ankle rehabilitation. Pace star Will O'Rourke also misses out with an injury to his left hamstring and calf.
Allen and Seifert reunite to form explosive opening partnership
Finn Allen and Tim Seifert will come out again at the top of the order. The pair haven't batted together for New Zealand since their joint campaign at this year's T20 World Cup, and what they produced there remains fresh in the memory.
Allen blasted an unbeaten 33-ball century against South Africa in the semi-final at Eden Gardens as New Zealand cruised to a nine-wicket win.
Seifert contributed 58 off 33 balls in that same match and had arguably the best tournament of his international career, later winning the Player of the Tournament award in The Hundred after scoring 394 runs at a 168 strike rate, including a match-winning 72 off 38 balls in the final.
