NEW DELHI: Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) chief spokesperson Saurav Das on Sunday questioned the silence of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the High Court and the Supreme Court over the alleged assault and torture of the party’s Mumbai lead, Pranay Ahire.Addressing a press meet, Das alleged that Ahire was subjected to custodial torture and questioned why human rights bodies and the judiciary had not intervened.Das also asked, “Is the Human Rights Commission sleeping?”“Where is the NHRC? Where is the high court? Where is the Supreme Court?” Das asked, questioning the response to the alleged assault on Ahire.He accused the police of seizing CJP leaders’ phones without following due procedure and preventing them from contacting their lawyers.In a post on Saturday, CJP said Ahire was in hospital after being “brutally assaulted by Delhi Police” while participating in a protest in Delhi. The party said he had been exercising his democratic right to protest when the incident occurred.CJP said Ahire sustained head injuries and was hospitalised after being allegedly assaulted by Delhi Police during a protest in the national capital.“A uniform is not a licence to assault people. You are supposed to uphold the law and not make a mockery of it,” CJP said in the post, demanding accountability for the alleged assault.The party also said it would not be intimidated or silenced and would pursue the matter.CJP alleges phones seized without seizure memosDas further alleged that Delhi Police did not provide formal detention notices to the protesters and seized their phones without issuing seizure memos.
