West Bengal to withdraw TMC govt cases against Kurmis over 2025 stir: Suvendu Adhikari

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday announced that cases registered by the previous government against members of the Kurmi community in connection with a violent protest last year would be withdrawn.Adhikari made the announcement while addressing the grand Kurmi Karam festival at Karadi Maidan in Purulia. The community had held an agitation demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) in the district in September 2025.“All cases registered by the previous government against Kurmis during their agitation will be withdrawn,” Adhikari said. He alleged that the previous administration, led by Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, had created "divisions" within the Kurmi community.Adhikari further stated that the BJP government, which came to power earlier this year, would fulfil the promises made by the party ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections in April.He also highlighted measures taken by his government for the Kurmi community since assuming office.“We allocated Rs 50 crore for your development in this year’s Budget, and the amount will be increased in the coming days. We will also ensure the inclusion of Kurmali and Rajbanshi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution,” he said.(With PTI inputs)Get the latest India News and Live updates. Download the TOI app.
