Cornell will not release report from alleged gang rape investigation
The university declined to release a six-page report from the investigation into an alleged gang rape at a fraternity party.
( NewsNation ) — Cornell University will not be sharing the six-page victim report from an alleged gang rape at a fraternity party in 2024.
“Cornell University Police shared a lengthy police investigation report with the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office. Any questions about the report should be addressed to the DA,” a Cornell spokesperson told NewsNation.
That comes as a transcript of the accuser’s interview with campus police, obtained by CBS News , reportedly shows her saying that she was “100% certain” she was raped.
The allegations attracted attention after the victim, identified only as Jane Doe , filed a lawsuit against seven then-members of the Chi Phi fraternity over an assault in which she says she was drugged with ketamine at a frat party and raped by multiple men.
The university investigated the case, but not the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office, which has since reopened it.
District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said his office did not pursue the case because the initial sworn statement provided to them by Cornell did not include elements that would lead to criminal charges , noting that the allegations in the lawsuit are “dramatically different.”
Van Houten noted his office was not given the transcript of the victim’s interview with police, according to CBS , and he told the outlet he would be following up on it.
Snapchat messages from fraternity members, which were not provided to the DA’s office at the time, may also play a key role in the reopened investigation.
