Sullivan endorses Sullivan against Sullivan in Alaska

Three Dan Sullivans are wading in on Alaska’s Senate race but only one Dan Sullivan has earned the support of a former lawmaker with his namesake.

Sen. Dan S. Sullivan (R-Alaska) was endorsed by former Anchorage Mayor Dan A. Sullivan (R) last Tuesday as he prepares to face off against Dan J. Sullivan and Rep. Mary Peltola (D-Alaska) in November.

“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for Sen. Daniel S. Sullivan. He’s been great for Alaska,” the former mayor of Anchorage wrote in a Facebook post last week.

The post comes after Dan J. Sullivan’s campaign faced legal challenges , as Dan S. Sullivan and the National Republican Senatorial Committee accused him of launching a Senate bid to create confusion for voters seeking to elect the incumbent lawmaker.

Carol Beecher, a registered Republican and the director of the Alaska Division of Elections, attempted to remove Dan J. Sullivan from the primary ballot and disqualify his campaign, citing his logo’s similarities to the incumbent senator’s.

However, Dan J. Sullivan challenged the measure in court, and in June, Superior Court Judge Thomas Matthews ruled that Dan J. Sullivan could remain on the ballot for the state’s primary on Aug. 18.

Republicans Dan J. Sullivan and Dan S. Sullivan advanced to Alaska’s general nonpartisan election in November alongside Democrat Peltola (Alaska), who Dan. J. Sullivan has said he voted for twice in previous elections.

The race is considered a toss-up by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report while Decision Desk HQ has Peltola favored to win due to her past success in statewide races and status as a moderate Democrat who hires Republican staffers on the Hill.

Some Republicans have accused Dan J. Sullivan of being a Democratic plant and entering the race to siphon votes away from the incumbent senator with the same name.

Dan J. Sullivan, a retired teacher, has denied those accusations.
