Watch live: Trump’s pick to lead FDA faces Senate confirmation hearing

Dr. Heidi Overton, President Trump’s pick to lead the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will testify before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) on Thursday as she seeks confirmation to lead the agency.

Overton, a White House domestic policy aide and preventive medicine physician, is expected to face questions about vaccines, the abortion pill mifepristone and the direction of the FDA.

Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who chairs the panel, has raised concerns about her role in Trump’s push to scale back the childhood vaccine schedule , calling her involvement “almost disqualifying” when she was nominated last month. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has also pushed back on the agency’s recent approach to drug approvals.

If confirmed, Overton would succeed former FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, who resigned in May .

The hearing is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT.
