Five people are believed dead after an active shooting incident at a Bend, Ore. elementary school, two law enforcement officials told the Associated Press .
The sources told the AP it was not clear if the shooter, who the Bend Police Department said was dead, is included among the five. The AP reported that the death toll was preliminary and could change.
The incident was reported at Silver Rail Elementary School.
Bend Police say the suspect was shot and killed before they arrived on the scene, “possibly by a bystander.” Law enforcement sources told the AP that the shooter was a 15 or 16-year-old male.
Police first responded to the report of an active shooter at 12:59 p.m. PDT, and were on the scene three minutes later, at 1:02 p.m.
Bend Police said law enforcement was evacuating each classroom, and transporting children to Journey Church for family reunification, around five minutes from Silver Rail Elementary School.
In a statement, Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook extended sympathy to the families and those affected.
“No words can adequately express the grief our community is experiencing,” Cook said. “Our immediate priorities are caring for our students and staff and assisting law enforcement and emergency responders.”
