Live updates: Trump, Vance, past presidents pause to remember Sept. 11

President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth are attending a remembrance at the Pentagon , while Vice President Vance has joined past presidents and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D) at Ground Zero on Friday morning, as America pauses to honor the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

While the memorial in New York includes no politics, remarks from Trump and Hegseth at the Pentagon memorial both raised the Iran conflict amid remembrances of those lost.

Twenty-five years after four jets took down the World Trade Center, crashed into the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania, the Trump administration is stepping gingerly into a loosening of tight airport security measures implemented in the aftermath.

Mamdani, a Muslim, has faced criticism for plans to attend the ceremony at Ground Zero. Some 9/11 families, along with former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R), have cited past critical remarks from Mamdani’s political allies.

The solemn day follows two days of cheerleading in Dallas for the Trump administration and Republican midterm candidates. Vance closed the convention amid growing chatter about his 2028 prospects. His Thursday night keynote offered the vice president a chance to charm the base that will be critical if he decides to run to succeed Trump in the next election.

The president will return to the White House for signing time before departing later Friday for Dublin. He’ll spend the weekend at his golf resort for the Irish Open.
