Reed easily wins Democratic primary for sixth Rhode Island Senate term

Sen. Jack Reed (D) sailed through his Rhode Island Democratic primary on Wednesday, easily besting longshot challengers, according to a Decision Desk HQ projection.

The win in the deep blue state puts the 76-year-old incumbent on a glidepath to win a sixth term in the Senate.

Reed defeated progressive Connor Burbridge, a 31-year-old eldercare worker and Army veteran who argued it was high time for a change in leadership, and Luis Daniel Muñoz, a 41-year-old consultant and former candidate for governor. He led Burbridge by about 60 percentage points nearly 50 percent of the vote reported per DDHQ.

Rhode Island’s House and Senate seats have all been steadily blue for decades, and Democrats have held the governor’s mansion since 2014.

Together with three terms in the House, Reed has served on Capitol Hill for more than three decades. An Army veteran, he’s the ranking member of the Senate’s Armed Services Committee.

Rhode Island is the second-to-last primary of the 2026 midterm cycle, before Delaware’s primaries next Tuesday close out the calendar and kickstart the run-up to November’s general election.
