Trump suggests Omar resign ‘immediately’ over ‘fake name’

President Trump called on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) to “IMMEDIATELY resign” and accused her of using a fake name in a Truth Social post on Thursday evening.

“Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat,” Trump wrote. “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to FRAUD, and she will not be legally allowed to be a Member of this August Body from this point forth.”

In a Wednesday court filing a week after federal agents conducted a search warrant of Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., federal prosecutors referred to the Minnesota Democrat as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” without explanation.

Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney in Washington D.C., suggested Omar’s name could be part of a federal probe into the lawmaker, during an appearance on Fox News Thursday.

“If you have citizenship in this country, your derivative citizenship, or your naturalization, your application, will turn on precise information, and you have an obligation to report that precise information,” she said.

“So the question is, who is Ilhan Omar, and has she followed all of the laws as it relates to naturalization and immigration.”

The Trump administration is investigating the Somali-born lawmaker for alleged immigration fraud — an accusation she has repeatedly denied. Omar has accused the president of waging a “ campaign of political intimidation ” against her for years.

During an interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes on Wednesday, Omar said she would have to move out of her D.C. apartment because of the threats she has received after the federal search, in which she said agents seized 17 items.

The Democratic lawmaker told Hayes she was “confident” that she had done nothing wrong.

“I am a person of enormous faith,” she said. “And I know that … if I continue to live my truth, if I continue to fight for the right things, if I continue to stand up to bullies and people who are carrying out ungodly corruption, I’m going to be OK.”

On Thursday evening, Trump again invoked a conspiracy theory platformed by far-right commentators that Omar had married her brother, claiming they had the same last name. Omar called the accusation “insane” during her interview with MS NOW this week.

The president claimed in his Truth Social post that the Democrat replied to the question about whether she married her brother by saying, “Not to my knowledge.”

Trump added, “In other words, she somehow didn’t know?”

In the interview, the lawmaker made the statement after Hayes pressed her further about whether she was “related to him at all.” The Democrat laughed before adding, “Not to my knowledge.”

Trump also led calls for her removal from Congress during an Iowa rally on Thursday.

“If you get sworn in with a false name, I would imagine that’s pretty tough to remain,” he said, eliciting chants of “Lock her up” from the crowd.

This is not the first time the president has demanded Omar resign. During his first term, Trump requested the Democrat be removed from Congress and be stripped from her congressional committees for comments he called anti-Semitic.
