Hunter Biden: ‘I may have to’ run for president in 2028

Former President Biden’s (D) son, Hunter Biden, said that he may have to consider a 2028 presidential run amid speculation on who the Democratic nominee could be.

In a conversation with radio host John Catsimatidis, Biden was asked if had any plans to run for president where he said, “If I get your [Catsimatidis] endorsement, I may have to.”

When asked the same question earlier Biden stated, “I haven’t made up my mind.”

“The truth of the matter is that I think we have an incredible bench,” he said on “The Cats Roundtable,” mentioning Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D) before declaring “I love Gavin Newsom, personally.”

The governor of the nation’s most populous state has been open about his interest in seeking the top office. Newsom said in October 2025 that he would be “lying” if he said he wasn’t considering a bid for the White House after the 2026 midterms.

Other potential contenders include Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), former Vice President Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Biden expressed during this interview that no matter who the candidate was, he wanted, “the next president to commit to one thing: to commit to adhering to the rule of law. To commit to the idea that we believe in this constitutional republic and the aspirations of normal Americans.”

“I truly, truly want whoever is our president to succeed. But particularly succeed in keeping this country safe. That’s their primary responsibility,” he said.

An Emerson College and The Hill survey that ranked potential match-ups between potential GOP and Democratic presidential candidates found Biden’s pick in a decent position.

Newsom held small leads over both potential Republican nominees, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, unlike Ocasio-Cortez, who trailed both candidates.

Biden added that what he cared about right now “is the 50 million Americans that are still suffering sick … with their addictions.”

While acknowledging his struggles with substance abuse issues, he noted in the interview that he recently celebrated seven and a half years of sobriety.
