The White House laid blame on Republican candidates as poor results for the GOP rolled in on election night.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, a White House official described the mood inside the White House as “defiant.”
“President Trump was not on the ballot, and it’s proven that Trump voters show up when he is on the ballot,” the official said.
“Also, candidate quality matters, and President Trump did a better job promoting many of the candidates on the ballot than the candidates did themselves,” the official added.
The statement came as Republicans faced a slew of losses on election night. Decision Desk HQ projected that Democrats will retake the House majority. Additionally, it projected that Democrats won Senate seats in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Early returns out of Texas also showed tight races in the traditionally red state.
Trump spent much of the past month crisscrossing the country seeking to boost Republican candidates and urged his supporters to “pretend” he was on the ballot.
The latest statement from the White House is the first attempt to find a scapegoat for poor Republican midterm performances.
The White House official said voters who backed Democrats on Tuesday will regret their choice.
“Anyone who voted Democrat today is going to have a serious case of buyers remorse when gas prices come down quickly when the Iran conflict is solved but they’re still stuck with list of liberal extremist Democrats,” the official said. “And a final note here: regardless of how today plays out, President Trump’s resolve to stop the Radical Left is only going to become stronger. Buckle up.”
