The Trump administration is reportedly weighing whether to remove U.S. ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle from her role as new allegations emerge that wealthy Greek businessmen paid for her luxury travel while she used her diplomatic position to lobby their business interests.
According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, senior Trump administration officials are discussing Guilfoyle’s future and a decision from President Trump is expected soon.
During January’s World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Guilfoyle allegedly boasted about her connections to the wealthy businessmen while trying to secure an invitation from an American businessman to a dinner honoring the president’s son, Eric Trump, according to an audio recording reviewed by the Journal.
“You know, I can deliver the world to you. Which you deserve,” Guilfoyle told the American businessman in the audio. “I’m going to make you a lot of f—ing money.”
The State Department’s inspector general is also investigating whether the ambassador accepted gifts or favors from private businessmen, according to the Journal, who cited a person familiar with the matter.
The Hill has reached out to the White House and the State Department for comment.
The government watchdog’s probe comes after former attorney and longtime Trump ally Eric Deters accused her of requesting $100,000 from him to clear her American Express credit card bill days before her confirmation hearing last year in exchange for lobbying top administration officials on his behalf.
The latest scrutiny centers on Guilfoyle’s relationships with two prominent Greek business tycoons who reportedly provided her with private jet travel and other luxury accommodations.
Guilfoyle, who was previously married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and was the ex-fiancé of Donald Trump Jr., also spoke about flying to Davos on a private jet with Alexandros Exarchou, CEO of Greek construction company Aktor Group. The Journal previously reported that she had encouraged governments across southeastern Europe to purchase billions of dollars in American natural gas through Exarchou’s company.
She also described plans to travel to Paris with Greek shipping mogul Nikolas Tsakos, who later paid for her stay at the luxurious Four Seasons Hotel George V, the Journal reported.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Athens defended Guilfoyle in a statement to the Journal, saying she had “faithfully followed State Department ethics and gift reporting guidelines.”
