Democrat Sean McCann has won Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, ousting longtime Rep. Bill Huizenga (R), according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

Huizenga has represented western Michigan in the House for more than a decade. While he easily won his last race in 2024, the district has become more competitive in recent years and was viewed as a key pickup opportunity for Democrats this year.

McCann, a member of the Michigan state Senate, was tapped to be part of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s “Red to Blue” program, which aimed to flip Republican-held seats.

He also received support from prominent Michigan Democrats, including Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Elissa Slotkin.

McCann defeated Huizenga by 1.81 percentage points, DDHQ reports.

Huizenga, a key player on the House Financial Services Committee, initially weighed a run for Senate last year before seeking reelection in his southwestern Michigan district.

He ultimately decided against a bid for retiring Sen. Gary Peters’s (D) seat, clearing the way for former Rep. Mike Rogers to run as the Republican nominee.
